Upon first arriving in Hollywood (actually, Culver City), M-G-M began exploiting Hedy Lamarr as the world’s most beautiful woman, casting her as a person of mystery, or as an enigmatic femme fatale in exotic roles reminiscent of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. Studio boss Louis B. Mayer believed he’d discovered a second Garbo in Lamarr — one with greater sensuality. Back then no one could have imagined the impact one of her many inventions would have upon the entire world.
