Gary Nance’s comeback from a ventilator to the professional stage shows it’s never too late to rebuild
September 30, 2026 – Nationally recognized design architect Gary Nance, 73, placed 3rd in Men’s Classic Physique 70+ at the 2026 IFBB Pro Masters World Championship, held Labor Day weekend in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also placed 6th in Men’s Bodybuilding 70+. The result is the latest chapter in a comeback that began in an intensive care unit.
Nance was placed on a ventilator and spent 22 days in a COVID-induced coma. After he woke, he used a wheelchair and then a cane for nine weeks. Rather than accept a diminished life, he rebuilt his strength from the ground up. At age 70, he earned his IFBB Pro card at the Jersey Universe, becoming a professional bodybuilder at an age when most people have long since left the gym floor.
His path did not get easier. A COVID-related setback caused dangerous clotting and required the removal of half of his colon. He trained his way back, only to face major abdominal surgery in January of this year to address complications from that earlier procedure. Once again he rebuilt, and this time he returned to the professional stage and stood on the podium in Pittsburgh.
“I am lucky to be alive! I was hit with COVID, was on a ventilator and in a coma, but I finally regained consciousness only to be in a wheelchair and cane for months. The doctors told me if I hadn’t been in such good shape I wouldn’t have survived. It’s made me realize how important health is as well as family and faith. I feel it is my role to be an example for people to realize they can achieve health & fitness at any age.”
Before bodybuilding, Nance built a national reputation as an award-winning architect and home designer, known for elegant, grounded work that reflects the same discipline and vision he brings to his training. His story was recently featured in Sophisticated Living magazine, and his journey is the subject of the documentary Iron Will.
Nance is available for interviews, podcasts, speaking engagements, and brand partnerships.
