Barbara Cartland was one of the most successful and well-known of all British romance novelists and was undoubtedly the most prolific, writing 723 books in her long lifetime of which 675 are romantic novels and include 160 brand new titles that are currently being published as the Barbara Cartland Pink Collection.

She wrote across a wide variety of genres, but is of course most closely associated with romance, and with her stories of chaste heroines, dashing heroes and everyone finally living happily ever after. Barbara was a colourful character in many senses of the word and was as well known for her controversial and witty interviews and absorbingly exciting life story as she was for her bright pink clothes and extravagant appearance.

Barbara's health book The Magic of Honey was so influential that it reportedly caused honey shortages in health shops.

Her signature style was instantly recognizable: bright pink clothes, glamorous looks, and a very extravagant public image.

Before becoming famous for romance novels, she wrote gossip columns and was part of London’s glamorous “Bright Young People” social scene.

In 1931, she helped invent and fly the first aeroplane-towed glider.

She campaigned for better working conditions for nurses and midwives and supported Romany gypsy children’s right to attend school.

She recorded an album of love songs with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Princess Diana was her step-granddaughter and reportedly an avid reader of her novels.

Barbara Cartland once said, “Never look for love, love will find you.”

“A historical romance is the only kind of book where chastity really counts.”

“Love is even more beautiful than all the hills and lakes of Scotland.”
