Roy Campanella’s Impressive Career

Roy Campanella made 8 All-Star teams and was named MVP three different times in his stunning career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. His statistics might have been even more impressive had he been allowed to play Major League Baseball sooner (he had to toil in the Negro leagues until Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier), and had he been able to play longer (he was paralyzed for life in January of 1958 after an auto accident). Of course he was enshrined in the Hall of Fame. And he was a defensive stalwart as well as a power hitter who hit for a high average. Campy threw out 57% of the base runners who tried to steal on him, and which remains the highest percentage of anyone who ever played the game!
