  • Despite his individual brilliance, the combined record of the four clubs for which he played (Cardinals, Rams, Lions, and Eagles) was a dismal 58-117-5 and only two of his 14 teams managed better than .500 records.
  • After a sensational rookie year, Matson was forced to sit out the 1953 season in favor of U.S. Army service. Matson was traded by the Cardinals to the Los Angeles Rams for a whopping 9 players in 1959.
  • He still holds the all-time NFL record for most combined return touchdowns (punt and kickoff) in a career with 9.
