  • Matson led the nation in rushing yardage, touchdowns, and scoring as an All-American senior in 1951 for the University of San Francisco.
  • He finished 9th in Heisman Trophy balloting in 1951.
  • He won a bronze for the United States for the 440-meter race and a gold for the 1600-meter relay in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.
